"Everything works" for Roman Safiullin in return to winner's circle on ATP Challenger Tour

Roman Safiullin completed a dream run at the Oeiras Open 125, capturing the ATP Challenger clay-court title with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over top seed Valentin Royer of France in Sunday’s singles final.

The 226th-ranked Russian qualifier needed just 64 minutes to seal the most dominant of his seven wins this week, underlining his impressive return to form after a six-month injury layoff. A former Top 40 player and ATP finalist in Chengdu 2023, Safiullin had competed in only five events prior to arriving in Portugal, where he had already reached the semifinals last year.

This time, however, he went all the way. Safiullin’s path to the title included four victories over Portuguese opponents, notably saving a match point against Jaime Faria in the quarterfinals before defeating Henrique Rocha in the semifinals.

Flawless in the final

In the championship match, Safiullin delivered a near-flawless performance. He struck 21 winners compared to Royer’s 12, committed fewer unforced errors, and did not face a single break point.

“It was one of those matches where everything works,” Safiullin said. “You feel amazing, and nothing your opponent does can really hurt you. It’s rare, but every player experiences it at some point. To have it happen in a final is a bonus.”

The title marks Safiullin’s seventh ATP Challenger career crown in as many finals, his second at 125 level and first on clay at this tier. The victory also secures his place in the qualifying draws for both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, following a significant rise in the rankings. He earned €30,460 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.

Adding a personal touch to the triumph, Safiullin revealed that his wife had inspired his run after winning a ballet competition the night before the tournament began. “She told me I had to win the tournament as well,” he said with a smile. “Now we finally have time to celebrate both victories.”
