Felix Auger-Aliassime makes history by reaching first Roland Garros quarterfinal

Felix Auger-Aliassime kept marching through the draw at Roland Garros on Monday, defeating Alejandro Tabilo, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals at the clay-court major.

And it was a double-milestone kind of day for the Canadian.

First of all, he’s now through to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros for the first time in his career, his best previous results being a pair of fourth rounds in 2022 (falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal) and 2024 (falling to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz).

Secondly, having already reached the quarterfinals or better at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, Auger-Aliassime has become the first Canadian man ever to reach the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam events in their career.

Not just in the Open Era, but ever.

In a battle between Canadian-born players—Auger-Aliassime was born in Montreal and Tabilo in Toronto, though he now competes for Chile—Auger-Aliassime came out strong, breaking in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead and riding that break to the 39-minute first set.

The second set was far more competitive, and Tabilo had his chances—including a break point with Auger-Aliassime serving at 3-4—but Auger-Aliassime saved it and held, eventually got the only break of the second set for 6-5 and served it out for a two-set lead.

Tabilo held to begin the third set but from there Auger-Aliassime shifted into another gear, reeling off six games in a row to run away with it, ripping a big backhand return winner to close it out after two hours and six minutes.

“My best match so far in the tournament,” he said. “Over the victory, it feels good. It feels good to play the way that I ambition to play in this game. Today, in a Grand Slam, this is the type of match that you want to play. I’m happy with my performance.”

Awaiting the No. 4-seeded Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals will be No. 10-seeded Flavio Cobolli, a 6-2, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) winner over American Zachary Svajda earlier in the day.

Cobolli is 2-0 against Auger-Aliassime, both meetings coming in 2024, with the Italian prevailing in the first round of Acapulco that year, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and then in the first round of Cincinnati, 6-3, 6-2.

This will be the pair’s first career meeting on clay.
