INTERVIEW: Sebastian Korda shows inner 'fire' is back in Miami after eliminating Stefanos Tsitsipas

Miami Open Match Preview

Korda and Monfils have met just once, but neither of them will need to be reminded of what the other guy plays like. Their lone encounter happened in Indian Wells not much more than a week ago. Monfils won, but it was as tight as two sets can get, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).

Korda is one of a numbers of a players who started slowly in 2025, but have started to show signs of life during the Sunshine Double. The American beat Stefanos Tsitsipas two days ago for his first notable win of the season. Korda is comfortable here; he made his breakthrough in Miami when he reached the quarters as a 20-year-old in 2021.

Monfils, on the other hand, has been very much alive for this entire year so far. Each week, the 38-year-old seems to break another age-related record. In January, he became the oldest man since 1990 to win a title; this week, he became the oldest to reach the round of 16 at a Masters 1000.

Befitting a tennis player of his age, though, he hasn’t done it the easy way. Monfils won his first match 6-4 in the third, and his last two 7-6 in the third. He’ll be on court at noon on Tuesday, after staying to watch his wife, Elina Svitolina, play late into the evening on Monday.

As those scores show, just about every match Monfils plays can go either way, and every one of them can seem to be decided randomly, by a couple of points late in the final set. Maybe after three tight victories, the old dad is due to lose a close one. And maybe Korda, who should be entering his prime at 24, is due to start a surge. Winner: KordaSteve Tignor
