WATCH: Monfils had been in good spirits after making a winning return to action at the Omnium Banque Nationale.

Gaël Monfils has withdrawn from the US Open, saying he has not recovered from the foot injury he experienced at Montreal.

The 35-year-old Frenchman retired in the third round of the Masters event against Jack Draper, his first event back from a right foot problem that had kept him off the tour since Madrid.

Monfils did not specify whether this foot injury was in the same area as his previous one, on which he underwent a procedure.

"I am forced to undergo a new period of treatment before being able to resume tournaments," he said on social media.

Monfils was enjoying a resurgence this season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and returning to the Top 20 in the rankings. The former Grand Slam semifinalist has had repeated injuries since starting on tour but has also reached a career-high No.6 in the rankings.

His spot in the draw will go to Taro Daniel of Japan.

Monfils did not provide any schedule for a return to competition.
