Not long after Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by Benjamin Bonzi over four sets in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday, fellow Top 10 competitor Holger Rune was also shown the exit door at the grass-court major.

It was arguably a tougher blow for the world No. 8, who succumbed to Nicolas Jarry despite winning the first two sets.

The Chilean arrived to London low on confidence, having tumbled outside of the Top 150 in May while winning just six tour-level matches from the 19 contested in 2025.

Jarry had also never claimed any of his previous five-set encounters until completing his 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Dane.

Rune was visited by the trainer to address his right knee when he was down a break in the fourth set, and afterwards, shrugged off the defeat and added that record opening day temperatures at The Championships did little to play into the outcome.

“I mean, if I play normal, I'm beating him nine out of ten times, with all respect for Nicolas Jarry. Obviously today didn't make it a lot easier with my knee, but yeah, it was not great,” the 22-year-old told press.

Describing what changed for him physically, Rune shared, “Fourth set, I started to feel my knee and then got some treatment. Yeah, never was able to serve and hit my backhand as I was able to do in the first two sets.”

The 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist previously cited his right knee as the reason for retiring down a set against Flavio Cobolli at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open after twisting it during their warm-up.

In 2024, Rune attributed pain in that area as a contributing factor to his opening straight-set loss to Brandon Nakashima at the US Open when he struggled to make first serves. Similar discomfort weeks earlier that season in Hamburg saw him retire down a set and 4-1 to Arthur Fils, though a left wrist injury was what officially ruled him out of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I'm going to check now with the head doctor and physio and will take it from there,’ Rune said as his press conference wrapped.

For Jarry, this is ideally a starting point to turn a long season around. The former world No. 16 celebrated his first Top 10 win in more than a year—and his first at a major.

More notably, Jarry snapped a seven-match losing streak on the Grand Slam stage. A victory over Learner Tien Wednesday would see the 29-year-old equal his best career showing at the All England Club as he bids to build his ranking back up.
