A day after China’s Zhang Shuai retired late in the first set of her first-round match with Hungary’s Amarissa Toth at the Hungarian Grand Prix following a regrettable sequence of events, the Budapest-staged tournament is now in hot water with the WTA.

On Wednesday, the tournament’s Facebook page responded to several comments on a video upload of Toth’s post-match interview. In one reply, the page asserted, “The Chinese are manipulating the world with manipulative video.”

The original comment and response appear to both be deleted or hidden as of now, but in today’s age, screen shots live forever. Tweeted Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette upon seeing the distasteful answer, “This is the worst response by a tournament I have ever seen.”

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, the WTA put out the below statement.

“The WTA has zero tolerance for racism in any form or context. The unfortunate incident that took place yesterday at the Hungarian Grand Prix and subsequent posts are being reviewed and will be addressed.”

Several players, from Ons Jabeur to Daria Saville, had previously showed their support for Zhang. The former world No. 22 is a two-time Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist and holder of two major doubles trophies.

Toth, a 20-year-old ranked No. 548, is scheduled to face Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine on Thursday.
