"I told Iga she didn’t have to be insincere about my injury," Collins said afterward, adding, "I don't need the fakeness."

Iga Swiatek vs. Danielle Collins

You’ve heard of Super Saturday. Will this be Salty Saturday inside Rome’s Campo Centrale? That’s where Swiatek and Collins will meet, second up in the early afternoon. It’s a match that has been much-anticipated among WTA fans, and fans of drama in general, since the American and the Pole last played at the Paris Olympics.

When Collins was forced to retire that day, and Swiatek started to express concern, Collins waved her away and said, “I don’t need the fakeness.” This January, at the United Cup team event in Australia, Collins upped the ante by rolling her eyes as she shook Swiatek’s hand—and then putting a photo of the moment on her Instagram.

So there will be plenty to watch when they face off again in Rome. But what might we see in the match itself? The head-to-head record doesn’t bode well for Collins. She’s 1-7 against Swiatek, and has lost their last six matches. Both of these women like to get in the first strike and play offense. Normally, when Collins’ low-margin shots are clicking, her flat pace allows her to do that, but it doesn’t bother the younger, faster Swiatek.

Still, Collins has had her moments against Iga. Her lone win was a big one, in the 2022 Australian Open semifinals, and she has taken sets on two other occasions. We can guess that she’ll come with maximum intensity, and maximum noise. If so, will it rattle Iga, or inspire her? Winner: Swiatek

Carlos Alcaraz on Jannik Sinner: "He pushes me to be better"

Jasmine Paolini vs. Ons Jabeur

Italian players get a lot of love—loud love—in Rome, but it often seems to do more harm than good. The last native-born women’s champion was Rafaella Reggi in 1985; the last native-born men’s winner was Adriano Pannatta, in 1976.

Paolini, a Top 10 player and two-time Grand Slam runner-up in 2024, would seem like a candidate to end that drought. But she’ll need to end her own run of Rome futility first to do it. The No. 6 seed is 2-5 for her career at the Foro Italico, and had never been past the second round before this year.

Paolini, after a slow start to 2025, has improved to 17-8 on the season with a couple of semifinal runs. While she’s 1-2 in completed matches against Jabeur, she did win their most recent meeting, on clay in Stuttgart last year. Paolini has a Roland Garros final to defend in a few weeks; maybe thoughts of Paris will motivate her in Rome. Winner: Paolini

Jannik Sinner vs. Mariano Navone

The big event of the early days in Rome—the home-country No. 1’s return after a three-month ban—will happen in prime time on Saturday evening. Navone says he knows what he’s in for, crowd-wise, and he’s looking forward to it.

“This is why we play tennis, to play in the biggest stadiums in the world,” the Argentine told the ATP’s website. “It’s not fun when you’re playing in a small place, with just you and your coach.”

“Argentine fans love this atmosphere, with lots of shouting…It’s very good.”

Will the 24-year-old, 99th-ranked Navone enjoy facing his opponent as much as he enjoys hearing from the audience? The two have never played, but Sinner, who is still No. 1, will be the clear favorite. He’ll be at home, and he’ll be motivated to get as many reps in on dirt as he can before Roland Garros. While clay is not his favorite surface—just one of his 19 career titles has come on it—he’ll be able to shift into a shot-making gear that Navone will struggle to match.

Still, Navone is a grinder who spends most of his life on clay, and who has wins over the higher-ranked Holger Rune, Felix Auger Aliassime and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on it this year. He’ll give Sinner a taste of what’s coming. Winner: Sinner
