In his first match since Wimbledon, Federer rolls in Cincinnati opener

In his summer hard-court debut, seven-time Cincinnati champion Roger Federer made a quick work of Juan Ignacio Londero with a 6-3, 6-4 win to advance to the third round on Tuesday.

In July, Federer squandered two match points against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, failing to secure his 21st major. Following the disappointing loss, the 38-year-old Swiss took a family vacation—by caravan.

“I was half broken from Wimbledon and everything," he said. "We enjoyed being home in Switzerland. The weather was so nice like it is here right now at the moment. We went to do hikes and sort of walked around and barbecued, so we had the best time.”

Londero has put together a strong season thus far, winning his first career ATP title in Cordoba in February and reaching the Bastaad final in July. Starting the season ranked No. 118, he reached his career high No. 55 on Monday.

Despite playing the 25-year-old Argentine for the first time, Federer had no trouble adjusting as it took him just 22 minutes to wrap up the first set, dropping only five service points. At 2-2 in the second, a rain shower sent the players to the locker room. After they resumed, the 2018 finalist needed just one break to close out the match. He only faced just one break point.

The third seed awaits the winner of fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka, who battled past Grigor Dimitrov, and qualifier Andrey Rublev, a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 winner over Hamburg titlist Nikoloz Basilashvili. Federer defeated Wawrinka in last year’s Cincinnati quarterfinals en route to the championship, where he was outclassed by Djokovic.

Elsewhere, two-time champion Serena Williams withdrew from her opening match with a back injury that forced her to retire from the Toronto final on Sunday against Bianca Andreescu just four games in. She was scheduled to face Zarina Diyas on Tuesday evening and was replaced by lucky loser Jessica Pegula, who claimed her first WTA title two weeks ago in Washington.
