ITF to work with WTA on Billie Jean King Cup scheduling following Iga Swiatek withdrawal

The ITF has reacted to Iga Swiatek's criticism of the back-to-back scheduling of the WTA Finals and the Billie Jean King Cup, saying it is working with the Hologic WTA Tour to improve co-ordination going forward.

The world No. 1 decided to withdraw from Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as Fed Cup, saying playing both events was "not safe for our health" and "could cause injury," especially given the distances involved. The eight-player WTA Finals have been moved to Fort Worth, Texas, from China while the Billie Jean Cup is now being played in Glasgow as a week-long 12-team event, with just a day in between the two competitions.

"I’m disappointed that tennis governing bodies didn’t come to an agreement on something as basic as the calendar of tournaments, giving us only one day to travel through the globe and changing the time zone," Swiatek said.

The 20-year-old from Poland added that she would speak to the ITF and the WTA about the issue.

Speaking to Reuters, ITF president David Haggerty said the organization "recognizes that the schedule... presents a challenge for players competing in both events" and is working with the WTA "so that we have a better transition between the two competitions" next season.

The changes to the scheduling of the events this season created challenges, noted Haggerty.

“We have been working with the WTA to try to coordinate suitable dates," he said. While we were able to confirm the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow back in June, the WTA Finals venue in Fort Worth, Texas was confirmed during the U.S. Open.”

The Hologic WTA Tour has not commented on the scheduling.
