Yoshito Nishioka withdrew up 7-6 (3), 0-4, in his first round match against Jack Sock at the Citi Open on Monday night due to an apparent calf injury. The injury does not appear to be serious, but one can hardly blame Nishioka for succumbing to a minor ailment given his extreme globetrotting over the past month.

From Wimbledon to Newport, Newport to Tokyo, and then right back to the States, Nishioka has flown nearly 17,000 miles in the past month. Nishioka is just 2-6 in his last eight matches since June.

Sock defeated Nishioka two weeks ago in the Hall of Fame Open first round, and for his efforts tonight, will face tournament headliner Rafael Nadal on Wednesday night.

Including the Laver Cup, the American is 0-5 against the Spaniard, but has the added benefit of facing Nadal coming off a near two-month hiatus since his loss to Novak Djokovic in the Roland Garros semifinal.

After a nightmarish few years, Sock is steadily increasing both his form, fitness and ranking, climbing from completely unranked at the end of 2019 all the way to No. 192.
