Jamie Murray has revealed the way his surprise mixed doubles pairing with Venus Williams came together, saying he had not planned to play the event until offered the chance to partner Williams.

Their unexpected entry has drawn extra attention to a competition that also includes other notable new teams like Coco Gauff and Jack Sock.

"The mixed can be so random but I'm just excited about playing with Venus," Murray told Scottish press, following his opening men's doubles win with Bruno Soares at Wimbledon.

"It's going to be a great experience to be on the court with such a champion. I'm really looking forward to it."

Murray has won the mixed doubles twice at Wimbledon, while Williams is a six-time women's doubles champion at Wimbledon.

It recalls the former mixed doubles campaign by the pair's younger siblings, Andy Murray and Serena Williams, in 2019 when they reached the third round.

Murray said he had been asked in 2021 about playing mixed by the 42-year-old Venus, who wound up playing with Nick Kyrgios instead and was not anticipated to appear in this year's event since she had not entered the singles.

"My neck had been so bad and I just wanted to concentrate on the men's doubles,” Murray recalled. “When she asked me again this year, I hadn't realized this would be her only event here and you can't say no to Venus twice.”

Murray had won the mixed doubles twice at Wimbledon. Williams has won two mixed doubles Slams and is a five-time women's champion at Wimbledon.

There could be some confusing score lines as they take on Michael Venus and Alicja Rosolska in the opening round.

Murray and Williams have received a wild card into the mixed competition.
