Jannik Sinner clinches No. 2 ranking, a new career-high, after winning Miami Open title

With his straight-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the Miami Open on Sunday, Jannik Sinner has made history.

The 22-year-old is now going to rise to a new career-high ranking of No. 2, making him the first Italian tennis player to reach the Top 2 in either ATP or WTA rankings history.

He was already the first to reach No. 3—he achieved that last month (February 19th) after winning the ATP 500 in Rotterdam.

He'll officially rise No. 2 when the new rankings come out on Monday, switching spots with current No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

And that’s not the only history Sinner achieved today.

First of all, he’s the first Italian player ever, male or female, to win the Miami Open. He was already the only Italian to even reach the final, having finished runner-up twice previously—in 2021 to Hubert Hurkacz and last year to Daniil Medvedev. The tournament dates back to 1985 for both the men and women.

Second of all, he’s the first Italian player ever to win multiple Masters 1000 titles. This is his second Masters 1000 title, after conquering Canada last summer. The only other Italian player to win a Masters 1000 title since that level of tournament began in 1990 is Fabio Fognini, who won Monte Carlo in 2019.

And finally, he’s now won more tour-level titles than any other Italian player, male or female, in the Open Era. This is the 13th ATP title of his career, surpassing Sandra Cecchini, who won 12 WTA titles in her career. Sinner already held the men’s record.
