Jannik Sinner wins Indian Wells, completes career set of Masters 1000 hard-court titles

Jannik Sinner has defeated Daniil Medvedev, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), to not only win his first title of the year and the milestone 25th tour-level title of his career, but to make a little bit of history.

Having already won Miami, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris, the Italian now completes his career set of Masters 1000 hard-court titles with his first Indian Wells trophy.

That’s not the historic part, though, as he’s not the first player ever to win all six Masters 1000 hard-court events in their career...

… but at just 24 years old, Sinner is the youngest player ever to win all six Masters 1000 hard-court events in his career, since the Masters 1000 level began in 1990. The only other two players to do it, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, were both in their 30s.

Federer was 33 when he completed his set at Shanghai in 2014—or, if you consider his Madrid title from 2006 as counting for that slot in the calendar, he was 30 when he did it at Paris in 2011.

Djokovic was 31 when he completed his set in Cincinnati in 2018.

Andre Agassi also won every Masters 1000 event on hard courts when he was playing, which was five events at the time—Indian Wells, Miami, Canada, Cincinnati and Madrid. He completed his set in his 30s, too, winning his first Indian Wells title when he was 30 (in 2001) and then Madrid when he was 32 (in 2002).

However you look at it, Sinner is by far the youngest.

And just for the record, Medvedev—who just turned 30 last month—would have been the youngest to do it had he won, too.

And there’s one more piece of history Sinner created on Sunday, as his victory over Medvedev was also his 100th Masters 1000 win.

The Italian, who was born in 2001, is actually the first player born in the 2000s to record 100 career wins at Masters 1000 events.

After ending Carlos Alcaraz’s perfect start to the season in the semifinals, Medvedev came out strong against Sinner in the final, too, staying on serve with him throughout the entire contest.

He was two points away from winning the first set twice, at 5-all and 6-all in the tie-break, and he seemed well on his way to claiming the second set tie-break, storming out to a 4-0 lead—but Sinner made one last run, reeling off the last seven points in a row to close out the breaker and clinch the trophy.

“First of all, it’s great to see Daniil back playing at this level," Sinner said in his on-court interview after the match.

“We are very happy. I came here, and from day one we practiced very hard, and having this result makes me really, really happy. I’m fortunate to share this moment with the team and with my friends here. It’s a really special moment.”

And on his phenomenal finish to the match? “I kept believing, I kept pushing, trying to go for shots,” he said. “If it was a third set we would have started again even, so I thought that I’m a set up, so just try my best to close it out. I’m very happy.

"It was an incredible ending.”
