Double threat Jasmine Paolini is now ranked in the Top 5 in both singles and doubles

She’s currently the only tennis player to be ranked in the Top 5—or even in the Top 10—in both disciplines.

There was some good news for Jasmine Paolini on the WTA rankings this week, as she rose from No. 5 back to her career-high of No. 4, securing her a Top 4 seed at Wimbledon—and guaranteeing she won't have to face either of the Top 2, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, until at least the semifinals.

And there was even more good news.

Paolini set a new career-high on the WTA doubles rankings, rising from No. 6 to No. 5, alongside doubles partner Sara Errani (they went from co-No. 6s to co-No. 5s).

With that, Paolini is currently the only player, female or male, to be ranked in the Top 5 in both singles and doubles. She’s actually the only player currently in the Top 10 in both.

Two other players, both women, are close to being Top 10 in both—Mirra Andreeva, No. 7 in singles and No. 14 in doubles, and Diana Shnaider, No. 12 in singles and No. 8 in doubles.

Paolini is just the fifth tennis player born in 1990 or later to have been ranked in the Top 5 in both singles and doubles simultaneously.

Paolini joins some rare company with her latest ranking feat.

First of all, she’s just the second Italian tennis player in either ATP or WTA rankings history to be Top 5 in singles and doubles simultaneously—Errani also achieved the feat, doing it for 10 weeks in 2013 (as No. 5 in singles and No. 1 in doubles).

Second of all, she’s just the fifth tennis player born in 1990 or later—all of them women—to do it, and the third born in 1996 or later after Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff.

Over the last 12 months, Paolini’s best singles results include reaching her second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year and winning her second WTA 1000 title in Rome this year.

And throughout that span she’s also been playing doubles exclusively with Errani, capturing five titles together at the Paris Olympics and Beijing in the second half of last year, and Doha, Rome and Roland Garros so far this year. Though they finished runners-up in Berlin last week, that run to the final of the WTA 500 grass-court event was enough to push them up from co-No. 6s to No. 5s on the WTA doubles rankings on Monday.

Paolini is playing singles only in Bad Homburg this week.
