Joao Fonseca had a breakthrough week in Basel last week, going all the way to the first ATP 500 title of his career, the biggest title a Brazilian man has won since Gustavo Kuerten won Cincinnati in 2001.

And today, Fonseca makes a big breakthrough on the rankings, soaring from No. 46 to a new career-high of No. 28, shattering his previous high of No. 42 for his simultaneous Top 40 and Top 30 debuts.

With that leap, at just 19 years old, he's already the fifth-highest-ranked Brazilian player in ATP rankings history, which dates back to 1973, and just the seventh Brazilian player overall to crack the ATP Top 30.

HIGHEST-RANKED BRAZILIAN PLAYERS IN ATP RANKINGS HISTORY:

  • Gustavo Kuerten, career-high No. 1 [December 2000]
  • Thomaz Bellucci, career-high No. 21 [July 2010]
  • Thomaz Koch, career-high No. 24 [December 1974]
  • Fernando Meligeni, career-high No. 25 [October 1999]
  • Joao Fonseca, career-high No. 28 [October 2025]
  • Luiz Mattar, career-high No. 29 [May 1989]
  • Marcos Hocevar, career-high No. 30 [June 1983]

Fonseca will try to continue his climb up the rankings this week at the Masters 1000 event in Paris, where he'll be making his career debut. He faces No. 24-ranked Denis Shapovalov in the first round.

A bit further up the rankings, two players break into the Top 15 for the first time this week—one on the men's side and one on the women's side—after posting runner-up finishes at 500-level events.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who reached his fourth final of the year in Basel before falling to Fonseca, rises from No. 18 to No. 15 for his Top 15 debut. And Linda Noskova, who reached the final in Tokyo before falling to Belinda Bencic, rises from No. 17 to No. 13 for her Top 15 debut.

Bencic, meanwhile, rises from No. 13 to No. 11 after capturing her 10th career WTA title in the Japanese capital, her highest ranking since returning to the tour as a mom last year. The Swiss is a former No. 4.

Also, American Ann Li cracks the Top 40, jumping 11 spots from No. 44 to No. 33 after winning the WTA 250-level event in Guangzhou.

Last but not least, there are some notable shake-ups in the ATP Top 10.

After reaching his fifth semifinal of the year in Vienna, Alex de Minaur rises from No. 7 to No. 6, a return to the career-high he set in 2024.

Casper Ruud is back in the Top 10 for the first time since June of this year, rising from No. 11 to No. 9 after reaching his eighth quarterfinal of the year in Basel. The Norwegian is a former world No. 2.

And Felix Auger-Aliassime is also back in the Top 10 for the first time since June... of 2023. The Canadian, a former No. 6, rises from No. 12 to No. 10 after reaching his 12th quarterfinal of the year in Basel.
