Steve Tignor's Match Preview
Marozsan made his name in Rome in 2023, when he stunned Carlos Alcaraz at a time when the Spaniard was looking especially unbeatable. Now the Hungarian will take a shot at another crowd-pleasing prodigy.
These two have never played, but they’re ranked comparably at the moment: Fonseca, 18, is up to No. 65, while Marozsan, 25, is treading water at No. 61. This may be the last time that the Brazilian is ranked behind Marozsan.
But while Fonseca has the brighter future, he’s still learning the rookie ropes right now. He has had some peak moments this season, but he has also taken the inevitable tough losses, including a two-tiebreaker defeat to Tommy Paul in Madrid two weeks ago, and a first-round loss at a Challenger last week.
Which means that this match should be competitive. Both guys are long and lanky, and like to fire away with their forehands as soon as they can. On his best day, Marozsan can do it as well as just about anyone, but I don’t think lightning will strike twice for him in Rome. Winner: Fonseca
