Joao Fonseca capped a dream week at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Sunday, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, for the biggest title of his career at the ATP 500 event.

In fact, it's the biggest title any Brazilian man has won since 2001, when Gustavo Kuerten won the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

That was just over five years before Fonseca was born.

The 19-year-old is now projected to rise from No. 46 to No. 28 when the new ATP rankings come out on Monday, shattering his previous high of No. 42 for his simultaneous Top 40 and Top 30 debuts.

The two had a back-and-forth start to the final on Sunday, with Fonseca grabbing the first break en route to a 3-0 lead but Davidovich Fokina getting that break back to close in to 3-2.

But from there Fonseca regained control, breaking again for 4-2 and eventually riding that break to the 40-minute first set.

Fonseca then broke again in the first game of the second set and the two held from there until it was over, and the Brazilian teenager served it out in style—a forehand winner for 15-0, an ace for 30-0, a service winner for 40-0 and then a huge backhand to close it out.

That last game was indicative of the entire match, really, as he finished with 29 total winners—including a whopping 20 off his forehand side—to a total of just 19 unforced errors.

"Man, it's crazy," Fonseca said afterwards in his on-court interview. "We've been through a lot, so I just want to thank my family, and my coaches that helped me achieve this amazing effort.

"My parents just came from Brazil—they were actually going to Paris, and then they just changed their flights and came here, like, one hour before the match with my uncles, so it's just amazing to have them all here for my biggest title of my career.

"It's a pleasure playing on this court, and it's a pleasure playing this tournament, and I'm just very happy."

Davidovich Fokina, meanwhile, falls to 0-5 in his career in ATP finals, and 0-4 this year alone, having finished runner-up earlier this season in Delray Beach (to Miomir Kecmanovic), Acapulco (to Tomas Machac) and Washington D.C. (to Alex de Minaur).

The silver lining for the Spaniard? He'll make his Top 15 debut on Monday, rising from No. 18 to a new high of No. 15.

Both players will now head to Paris for the final Masters 1000 event of the year, and both of them will face Basel rematches in the first round—Fonseca will face Denis Shapovalov, whom he beat in the quarterfinals in Basel, 3-6, 6-3, 4-1 retired (right knee injury), while Davidovich Fokina will face Ugo Humbert, whom he beat in the semifinals in Basel, 7-6 (4), 3-1 retired (lower back injury).
