Rodionov reigns in Bonn

At last week’s second edition of the Bonn Open, Jurij Rodionov captured the title by defeating Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, on a packed Centre Court at Tennis Club Blau-Gelb Bonn-Beuel.

Early on, there was little sign of an Austrian victory. The 26-year-old dropped serve in the opening game of the match, was broken twice and Skatov comfortably took the first set.

But Rodionov turned the match around in style. The world No. 185 and No. 7 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 event rediscovered his serving rhythm in the second set and overpowered his 24-year-old opponent with heavy baseline hitting. Increasing the tempo proved decisive. Skatov was unable to keep up in the decider. After two hours and 14 minutes, Rodionov sealed victory on his second match point with his 15th ace.

“I’m proud of my performance this week and happy to have won the tournament. I tried to stick to my game plan in every match,” said Rodionov. “Even if it didn’t always look great, you don’t complain after a title. At 5-4 in the third set, two of Timofey’s returns landed out—that’s what decided it in the end. I’m very happy with this success.”

The win marks his eighth career ATP Challenger Tour title and his second in Germany, following his triumph at the Koblenz Open in February 2024. The former Top 100 player earns 75 ATP Ranking points for his victory and moves up to world No. 154. Skatov, meanwhile, also enjoys a ranking boost, climbing to No. 259 after his run to the final.

Lajovic clinches Cordenons crown

In Cordenons, Italy, Dusan Lajovic of Serbia was crowned champion of the 22nd edition of Internazionali del Friuli Venezia Giulia – Acqua Maniva/Serena Wines 1881 Tennis Cup. The 35-year-old from Belgrade, seeded No. 2, defeated fourth seed Lukas Neumayer of Austria, 6-2, 7-6 (3), completing the week without losing a single set.

Coached by José Perlas but accompanied this week by fitness trainer Max Tosello, Lajovic stamped his authority early in the final. The two-time ATP Tour titlist and former ATP Cup champion with Serbia broke in the opening game and cruised through his service games with ease. A second break in the seventh game sealed the first set 6-2.

Neumayer, 23, started the second set stronger, using his wide serve to trouble Lajovic and breaking ahead. Lajovic hit back with a stylish drop shot to break in the fifth game, only for Neumayer to immediately respond and level at 3-3, sending the Centre Court crowd at SerenaManiva into full voice.

The Austrian upped the pressure, moving ahead 5-3 and earning four set points to force a decider. But he failed to convert, allowing Lajovic to break back and level at 5-5. In the tiebreak, Neumayer led 2-0 before Lajovic shifted gears, reeling off points quickly to seal the match 7-3 in the breaker.

Despite flashes of resistance, particularly when leading 5-3 in the second set, Neumayer was never fully in control of the contest.

The victory marks Lajovic’s eighth ATP Challenger career title from 11 finals and will return him to the Top 130. Neumayer is now 0-6 in Challenger finals, still waiting for his maiden trophy.
