Katie Volynets, Robin Montgomery among four U.S. women to qualify at Wimbledon

Five American women took the court Thursday at Roehampton looking to qualify into the Wimbledon main draw. Four successfully secured their places.

Katie Volynets, the top seed, saved her most emphatic performance for last. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native stormed past Talia Gibson, 6-0, 6-1, in just 50 minutes. Volynets converted five of seven break points and has now qualified at four consecutive Grand Slam events.

Boasting a career-high No. 71 ranking this week, Volynets won’t need to worry about making it five in a row when the US Open entry list comes out next month.

A day after surviving in a deciding 10-point match tiebreaker, Robin Montgomery pulled away from Valentina Ryser, 7-6 (3), 6-2, after a 5-0 lead in the first set nearly slipped away. The 19-year-old lefty saw the Swiss save seven set points across a four-game stretch in leveling for 5-5, before regaining control of the encounter.

Montgomery will now contest her first Grand Slam main draw away from the US Open.

Alycia Parks dashed the hopes of 15-year-old home favorite Hannah Klugman with her 6-3, 6-3 victory. Parks took 16 of 24 second-serve return points in sealing the win at the 70-minute mark.

Like Montgomery, McCartney Kessler will make her debut in Wimbledon’s 128-woman field. The No. 20 seed rallied past third-seeded Renata Zarazua, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Eva Lys of Germany overcame 2022 quarterfinalist Amanda Anisimova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Maxime Cressy, the lone American man to reach the final qualifying stage, was edged out by Felipe Meligeni Alves, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, in three hours and 18 minutes.

Former Top 10 competitors Richard Gasquet and David Goffin were also unable to clear their last respective hurdles. The Frenchman fell to Vit Kopriva, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, while the Belgian lost out to Mattia Bellucci, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
