Kei Nishikori has announced he is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left hip this week, aiming to come back on tour in around six months.

The 32-year-old from Japan, who has not played since Indian Wells, confirmed his layoff was due to the the injury. He said the decision was made in consultation with his medical team following several different rehab attempts.

It is yet another hurdle in Nishikori's injury-filled career, which has included wrist surgery in 2017 and elbow surgery in 2019 since he reached the final of the 2014 US Open.

The former No. 4, currently ranked No. 46, appeared to be returning to form in 2021, reaching the fourth round of Roland Garros, quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics and semifinals of Washington D.C. He had also added former player Max Mirnyi to his team as a coach, joining Michael Chang.

Nishikori has 12 career titles.
