WATCH: Leylah Fernandez overcomes a tough battle against Zheng Qinwen to move into the Monterrey quarterfinals.

Leylah Fernandez is looking to get some wins going in a place where she's had plenty of them.

The 19-year-old Canadian is playing this week's WTA event in Mexico, where she reached the first final of her career in 2020 in Acapulco and won her first title in 2021 at this same venue in Monterrey.

"I won my first title here so it is a special city for me," the No. 2 seed said this week. Fernandez eased past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-2, and edged Zheng Qinwen in a third-set tiebreak to reach the last eight.

"I always had good times here, and finally I got to play a match in front of the Monterrey public—hearing their support, it motivated me to work even harder on the court."

She is now through to the quarterfinals and looking to get three wins in a row for the first time since her sensational run to the final of the US Open. Since Flushing Meadows, she was 3-3 coming into this event and had exited in the first round of the Australian Open in what was a slow start to the season.

Fernandez is No.21 in the rankings, and will take on Wang Qiang for a place in the semifinals.
