The last time we saw Belinda Bencic in action was in April, when she lost to Ons Jabeur, 7-6 (6), 6-4, in the finals of the Charleston Open. Bencic needed to take some time off with a hip injury after, but having that type of result in a clay-court event is encouraging heading into Roland Garros. By all accounts, Bencic is healthy, and she is listed at +800 to win the most open quarter of the women’s draw. With that in mind, it’s very difficult not to suggest throwing a little something on this.

This play might come with some risk—every bet does—but can you really say that the other players in this quarter are significantly better than Bencic? The top seed in this section of the bracket are Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari. Both women are phenomenal when they’re playing their best tennis, but they’re not above being inconsistent. You never know when they might fail to show up on a big stage like Paris. And the reality is that Bencic can hang with either one of them when she’s at her peak.

Bencic has also had a very nice season thus far, boasting a career-high winning percentage right now. Yes, she's had some time off, but Bencic has won 74.1% of the matches she has played this season, and the hope is that she’ll quickly recapture her mojo when she gets out on the terre battue. Perhaps she’ll struggle a bit in the first round or two, as it’s never easy coming back from a long layoff. But this is still a play that is worth making, as she can easily find her groove after a couple of matches.

Bencic also happens to have a game that is nicely suited for Roland Garros. The 26-year-old has never made it past the third round of the French Open, but it’s only a matter of time before she breaks through. She has a 43-32 record on clay in her career, and she’s 17-5 on this surface over the last 52 weeks.

Bencic’s solid all-around game makes her a good fit pretty much anywhere, but the courts in Paris can play a lot faster than most when the weather is nice. And if she does play matches in good conditions, she could outmuscle her opponents throughout the course of this event. That’s why I like her to make some noise at this tournament, especially at these extremely long odds.
