Rafael Nadal’s career ends in Malaga, as Wesley Koolhof extends his own in dramatic Davis Cup doubles win

The 16-year-old cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 first-round win over former Roland Garros semifinalist Nadia Podoroska in the first round of the WTA 250 indoor clay-court event in Rouen, France. The 75-minute triumph also marked Andreeva's first win since the third round of the Australian Open.

"I didn't win a match for a long time, and this victory was important for me," Andreeva said afterwards. "I'm very happy with my level today, and my performance."

It was also the youngster's first match after injury cut her hard-court spring season short. The 2023 WTA Newcomer of the Year, lost in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open to American Katie Volynets on March 6. Less than a week later, she posted a statement to social media saying that she was withdrawing from the Miami Open due to arm tendonitis. Andreeva said she was exercising caution around the problem, in the hopes of "get\[ting\] stronger and be\[ing\] ready for the clay season."

Andreeva's 2023 breakthrough began on the red dirt. As a wild-card entry in Madrid, she reached the fourth round, and she also reached the third round in Paris, where she won the first set against Coco Gauff before losing in three sets.

The teenager is still limited in the number of WTA-level tournaments she can play in a calendar year due to the WTA's age-eligibility rules. She'll turn 17 on April 29.

But against Podoroska, who made the final four in Paris as a qualifier in 2020, fifth-seeded Andreeva won 18 of the first 21 points, and showed no apparent physical concerns. The second set, though tighter, was similarly routine; after the first six games went with serve, Andreeva broke twice in the final four games, and won the last seven points.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Caroline Garcia are the top two seeds in Rouen, and the event also features the clay-court return of Naomi Osaka.
