Petra Kvitova shared her intention to make the 2025 US Open the final tournament of her career on social media Thursday, the former world No. 2 revealing her preliminary retirement plans after accepting a wild card to the forthcoming Wimbledon Championships.

“As [with] all phases in life, there comes a day that it is time for a new chapter, and that time for me has come now,” Kvitova wrote in a statement. “I therefore wanted to share with you that 2025 is my last season on tour as a professional.

“I am excited and very much looking forward to soak in the beauty of playing The Championships, Wimbledon one more time, a place that holds the most cherished memories in my career for me. And while I am not entirely sure yet what my hardcourt swing in the US will look like, I am intending to finish my active playing career at the US Open in New York later this summer.”

The two-time Wimbledon champion, who turned pro in 2006, returned to action earlier this season from maternity leave, having given birth to her first child last summer. In six tournaments in 2025, she has won just one match at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in May.

“I’ll play as long as I enjoy it and we’ll see how everything goes,” she said at the time. “My parents are proud that I’m still trying, even though it’s not going that well sometimes!”

Kvitova kicked off her grass-court season at Queen’s Club, where she lost in three sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia. It was announced Wednesday that the 35-year-old would make her 16th main-draw appearance at the All England Club.

In addition to her two Wimbledon trophies, Kvitova won an Olympic Bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and 31 total WTA titles—including the 2011 year-end WTA Finals. A victim of a traumatizing 2016 home invasion, Kvitova overcame a resulting hand injury to make the 2019 Australian Open final and get within one win of the No. 1 ranking. She married coach Jiri Vanek in 2023 and is currently traveling on tour him and son Petr.
