World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will miss the ATP Finals due to injury. Nadal's participation was in question due to recent injury and the birth of his first child. The first alternate is Holger Rune, who just defeated Djokovic to win the Paris Masters 1000 event.

Nadal, who has never won the tour's season-ending championship, has played Djokovic in the tournament four times. His only win came during the round-robin portion of the 2010 event. Djokovic's wins—all in straight sets—came in the 2009 round-robin stage, the 2013 final and the 2015 semifinals.

The ATP Finals defending champion is Alexander Zverev, who has not played since retiring from the French Open (semifinals, against Nadal), with an injury.
