Sofia Kenin is eager to get back on court this week in Miami for what will be her first tournament since undergoing an emergency appendectomy during the Australian Open.

"I had surgery in Australia. I had to get my appendix removed. I think that of course was unfortunate. I could use that time as a break to get it together," she told press from Miami.

Kenin, who was the defending champion at the Australian Open, fell in the second round of the Slam to Kaia Kanepi. She then played one match at the Phillip Island Trophy, a WTA tournament held during the second week of the Australian Open in Melbourne, before experiencing pain and requiring surgery.

The world No. 4 has not played since then, but said she had "fully in a way recovered," though she is still catching up with her training.

"Given the circumstances, I still don't feel 100 percent tennis-wise, since I took a few weeks off and everything. I'm just happy that I'm able to play Miami Open. It was my eye, that was what I was planning to shoot for, start again my tour. I'm super happy," she said.

Kenin was also a finalist at Roland Garros last fall.
