WATCH: Stan Wawrinka defeats Daniil Medvedev in the 2022 Moselle Open

Stan Wawrinka is having a resurgence this week, reaching the Moselle Open semifinals in Metz as a qualifier.

The 37-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion defeated Mikael Ymer in the quarterfinals in a third-set tiebreak at around two hours and 50 minutes, having won against top seed Daniil Medvedev in the previous round.

"The enjoyment was there though the whole match," he said. "Of course there is fatigue, physical and mental, and also a lot of errors, but it was a high level and I'm very happy to have won this tiebreak."

His run came to an end after retiring in the first set against Alexander Bublik with a thigh injury, trailing 2-1, but the positive signs have been coming together for the Swiss.

The French-speaking Wawrinka has also had the crowd cheering him on as he returns from a foot problem that kept him off the court most of 2021.

"It's a great victory, with great crowd support," he said. "I feel as if I'm playing at home."

Reaching the semifinal is ever bigger for Wawrinka as he found his ranking down to No. 284 and had gone 3-9 this season.

The win also returns him to the Top 200 in the ATP Tour rankings.
