Taylor Fritz vs. Gabriel Diallo: Match Preview

Fritz should be a little weary, shouldn’t he? Since the end of June, he has won Eastbourne, made the semis at Wimbledon, and played in high heat at the 500 in D.C. last week. The latter wasn’t necessarily his first choice, but there’s a new rule that says players must compete in at least two 500s per season, and this was his best chance to fulfill that commitment.

“I’m going to be honest, I don't think that's the best rule,” Fritz said, “because I was injured earlier this year, and I felt like I really could have used a rest week.”

But he insists he’s ready to go in Toronto.

INTERVIEW: Taylor Fritz eases through in DC | Washington 2R

“Obviously being from North America, it’s a swing that I enjoy playing, and I’m excited to be here.”

Will he be as excited to face Diallo, a 23-year-old Canadian who just reached a career-high ranking of No. 35? These two met at Wimbledon last month, and Fritz escaped with a five-set win. But not before the 6-foot-8 Diallo showed off his promising mix of service prowess and all-around athleticism. He’s a fluid mover for a guy that tall.

Fritz’s best surface is grass, so the shift to hard courts should benefit Diallo. The pro-Canadian crowd should help as well. But winning breeds winning, and Fritz, tired or not, has been doing a lot of it lately. Winner: Fritz
