Dayana, 21, and Ivanna, 15, were recently forced to leave their parents behind in Odessa amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The two traveled to Lyon, where they narrowly lost their opening doubles match before Dayana made an exceptional run to the singles final.

BNP Paribas Open organizers then extended the Yastremskas a wild card into the 1000-level event in California. Dayana also competed in the singles draw, where she was edged out by Caroline Garcia in three sets Wednesday. She joined Steve Weissman for an extended interview at the TC Desk Thursday to discuss the situation back home and emotional toll of the past two weeks.
