Undefeated: De Minaur, Bautista Agut triumph on Day 2 of Valencia

The Region of Valencia Tennis Challenge, a three-day round-robin exhibition, continued Saturday with Day 2 of the tournament. A four-player field featuring Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Andujar, Alex de Minaur and Pablo Carreno Busta, it’s the first sporting event to be held in Spain since the coronavirus shutdown in March.

"We are very happy to be able to demonstrate that tennis and life in the Valencian Community are underway and demonstrate that we are prepared to face everything that comes," Bautista Agut said. "I hope this weekend will be very nice for everyone and hopefully we can do more of these events in the Community in the future."

Playing under strictly controlled conditions, the day kicked off with Bautista Agut squaring off against Andujar. Looking for his second straight victory, having taken out compatriot Carreno Busta in straight sets on Friday, Bautista Agut made quick work of Anduja, surrendering just two games, 6-1, 6-1.

Next up was De Minaur against Carreno Busta. The young Aussie, who won his Friday match against Andujar, is the only non-Spanish player competing. His mother, though, is Spanish and he quarantined in Alicante, where the exhibition is taking place. In his Saturday match, the 21-year-old gave away a one-break lead earlier in the first set but was able to regain the lead. In the second set, he needed just one break to close out the match, 7-5, 6-4.

The event concludes tomorrow, with the first match starting at 7:30 a.m. ET. Anduja faces Carreno Busta, followed by the undefeated players De Minaur vs. Bautista Agut.
