Venus Williams to "pop up" in Washington, D.C. and Toronto for first singles appearances since August 2021

Venus Williams is popping up again!

The seven-time major singles champion will make her first singles appearance in nearly a year after receiving wild cards for a pair of events in Washington, D.C. and Toronto.

Venus last contested a WTA singles match on August 23, 2021, falling to Hsieh Su-wei in Chicago. She delighted fans earlier this month after making an unexpected last-minute decision to play mixed doubles with Jamie Murray at Wimbledon, where she was inspired by Serena’s return to the grass-court major.

“You never know where I'll pop up,” Venus declared after she and Murray won their opening match.

The 42-year-old’s most recent singles win came in the first round of 2021 Wimbledon, when she beat Mihaela Buzarnescu.

News of Venus' National Bank Open participation was revealed Wednesday. Organizers previously disclosed her sister Serena Williams was among the competitors on an entry list last week that boasted the tour’s Top 30 players. Her best showing at the Canadian 1000 event, which sees the WTA and ATP alternate between Toronto and Montréal each year, was in 2014 when she upstaged Serena in Québec to reach the final (l. to A. Radwanska).

Citi Open officials announced Thursday that Venus would make her debut at the 250 event in the U.S. federal capital leading into Toronto.
