WTA Luxembourg shuts its doors, Linz to reschedule

The WTA event in Luxembourg will drop off the tour schedule from next season, while the WTA event in Linz has announced it is moving back by a month.

WTA Luxembourg organizers indicated they were not pleased with some WTA requirements and protocols, which they said hampered the tournament's fan friendliness.

"We will no longer organize a WTA tournament. That's a big change. But we no longer feel comfortable working with the WTA," Danielle Maas, the tournament director, told Tageblatt Luxembourg.

She pointed to a celebration for the tournament's 25th anniversary, saying there were no WTA executives and players are not allowed to attend the event.

"The WTA's approach has changed a lot since 2019," she said. "It shows there is no longer an interest from their side to carry on working with us."

Clara Tauson defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the final of the just-concluded event.

They plan to host an exhibition tennis event instead of the WTA tournament from next season.

The WTA event in Linz, which was scheduled to be played the same week as the BNP Paribas Open, has now changed its dates for this season to avoid clashing with the WTA 1000 event. It will be played from 6-12 November.

"That's why I really wanted a new date," Sandra Reichel, the tournament director, said in a statement. "Now we have the chance for a top-class field of players.”

Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion in Linz.
