Angelique Kerber vs. Petra Martic

Two confident groundstrokers and battle-tested veterans help kick off the Sunshine Swing on Stadium 1. Incredibly, they've only faced off three times, and not once since 2012. Neither player has had a standout performance in the last few seasons, but both players still have a competitive edge that is worth watching. Kerber is still seeking a signfiicant result since her return to the game since motherhood. Winner: Petra Martic

Christopher Eubanks vs. Brandon Nakashima

It’s a shame to lose one of these American contenders in the first round, but the draw gods had a different plan in mind. But the loser will at least go out with a bang—this match is destined for three sets. Although Nakashima is battling his way through Challengers more often than playing tour events, he boasts an 8-2 record on hard courts this season, whereas Eubanks stands at a much less appealing 1-3. With big serves and anticipatory momentum shifts, either American could walk away victorious, but recent form suggests one result. Winner: Brandon Nakashima

Camila Giorgi vs. Katie Boulter

These two have yet to meet, and their encounter is unfortunate timing for the Italian, as Boulter is riding high from her first WTA 500 victory. Both players are evenly matched otherwise. When it comes to the 1000s and Grand Slams, however, both have yet to figure out how to get over that next hurdle. For the fans, it’s going to be a fun battle between two respected players. For the players, it’s going to be the perfect performance test to see how they handle the nerves, excitement, and environment in the desert sun. Winner: Katie Boulter
