Novak Djokovic is now one win away from clinching his 11th Australian Open title—and making tennis history—after taking down two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in a thriller on Rod Laver Arena.
Djokovic had to dig deep over the course of five sets and more than four hours to prevail 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against his generational rival. Along the way, he snapped five-match losing streak to the 24-year-old Italian that stretched back to 2023. That run included three Grand Slam semifinal defeats—at the 2024 Australian Open, 2025 Roland Garros and 2025 Wimbledon—making Friday night’s victory all the more significant.
"I wouldn't dare to call it (my) finest ever, but definitely the finest in the last couple of years," Djokovic said of his semifinal performance. "Under the circumstances, in semis against Sinner, who has been playing best tennis of his life in last couple of years, particularly here, two-time defending champion? It doesn't get better than this."

The 24-time Grand Slam champion—who lost in the semifinals at all four majors last year—now has a chance to break his title tie with Australian legend Margaret Court. A 25th major would give Djokovic sole ownership of the all-time record for most Grand Slam singles titles in tennis history.
